Josiah Spode
Josiah Spode was born in March 1733. His father died, a pauper, 6 years later. He became an apprentice potter and eventually opened a small pottery workshop in Stoke-on-Trent, England.
Spode China
After he developed a technique of blue-underglaze transfer printing his business prospered and with designs by Thomas Minton he made a fortune.
His greatest achievement came late in life. By experimenting with the use of bone ash in the manufacture of china, he discovered the perfect formula for Fine Bone China.
White and translucent this new hard paste porcelain set a new standard of quality which the rest of the ceramics industry would soon follow..
Spode Today
Even today Spode Fine Bone China is produced using skills and processes Josiah Spode would recognize using the original raw ingredients - bone ash, china clay and Cornish stone and outstanding craftsmanship.
Each piece of Spode tableware is designed to balance shape, size and pattern. Each year new patterns, ornamentations and commemorative items are created, but they are always faithful to the Spode design ethos combining individual skill with harmonic design and refined decoration. Spode produce unique collectible tableware not something that is easy to mass produce.
For more than 225 years Spode designs have been highly prized and to many are still the first and best producers of Fine Bone China.
